It is the period called “Post COVID-19”. A period where a lot of downsizing has taken place in various companies, a period where people are scared of taking a pay cut if the company’s revenues do not pick up fast enough or even get relieved of their jobs. For some, they have realized a lot more and are preparing to move to better opportunities as an employee. For some employers, they have realized the redundant job roles, and it will not harm the company of such roles cease to exist – hence thoughts of downsizing is creeping in.

If as an employee, you are hearing side talks of downsizing or that your role is a redundant one, then it is time to plan to consider your options so as not to be caught unaware.

It’s easy to plunge into anguish if you lose your job. You will experience a lot of negative emotions – anger, fear, anxiety, worry and resentment. This mindset is self-destructive. It will pervade all aspects of your life and erode your self-confidence. It will sap your drive and motivation. It is hard to do, but you need to stop the negative thoughts.

So, when exactly is the right time or moment to begin the search for a new job?

  1. When the management seems to be inconsistent

There are times when the management of the organization you are working in will take some decisions that will raise some questions from the members of staff of the organization. Such a step might be that the management decided to do something apart from the norm or keep doing something the same way when it is obvious that way is fast going out of phase. This could lead to several kinds of repercussion – like reducing the company revenue that might eventually run the company down. You, being an employee do not want to be caught in such a moment when the company Director would call everyone and send them off due to “lack of funds”. When the board, members of staff start losing confidence in the decision making of the management, know that it is time for you to move on.

  • When the salary becomes irregular

When a company is finding it hard to pay salaries as at when due or start paying salaries piecemeal, it is a sign that such an organization is already swimming in troubled waters. It is a call sign for you to get your lifeboat ready to swim away so as not to go under with the company. The most important thing goal for a company to achieve asides from increasing revenue is to take care of its workers when due. If a company starts sending signals or mails ahead of payday that the salary will be delayed or that part will be paid now and the rest later, it is a sign that the company is under financial stress. This could be due to mismanagement of funds from the leaders of the company or loss in revenue. Either way, know it is time to find another place.

  • When you start getting negative signals from your employer

When your employer loves you and the way you work, you will know, It is that easy. If there comes a time that your employer starts complaining about almost everything you do or does not appreciate your efforts even when it yields an obvious positive result, know that your days in the company are numbered. You are just a fit of anger or mistake away from getting sacked. As a discerning employee, you should be able to observe your employer’s body language – if it does not seem right with you, you should be on the lookout for another place.

  • When you start getting bored

This is a very common reason for people to want to quit their jobs. This could even lead some to quit their jobs before getting another one. Number one rule of job engagement is “never quit your current job when you have not secured another job”. When you start getting a negative emotion or you stop feeling challenged in the course of discharging your job responsibility, start the search for better and more challenging work.

Getting a job is getting tougher by the day. You should try your best to hold on to your current job if it is meeting your needs. If you have a job at a small organization that does not seem to hold any good future growth for you, you start searching for another job immediately.
